Scientific Method The scientific method is the basic process that scientists use to study and explain how things work. Science is based on facts, not opinions or personal beliefs. Researchers from every branch of science use the scientific method to separate facts from opinions in a logical, objective approach.
Generally, there are six basic steps involved in the scientific method:
1. Purpose, Question, or Observation: State the question or problem that you want to solve based on something that you have observed.
2. Research: Learn as much background information as you can about the topic of the question. This step will help determine the experiments needed to find the answer or conclusion.
3. Hypothesis: Based on observations and research, make an educated guess about what the answer or conclusion might be.
SAMPLE PROJECT: (why, how, who, what, when, where)
Preparing & Predicting
Before you can create your experiment, you need to learn more about your topic through Research.
Your handout will help you with KEYWORDS and Questions
Before you can create your experiment, you need to learn more about your topic through Research.
- For our liquids and plants experiment, you should find out how plants grow and what they need to survive and flourish.
- While you can’t predict the future, you can make an Educated Guess about what will be good or bad for plants growth.
- Phrase your hypothesis as an If/Then statement and describe WHY you think that will happen.
- Example: If a type of plant was exposed water, soda or a sports drink, Then the plant exposed to water would grow the most Because water lacks harmful chemicals that could halt the growth of a plant.
- What kind of plant?
- What kinds of water, soda and sports drinks will we use?
Your handout will help you with KEYWORDS and Questions
